As Sierra Club members, we often criticize Ameren Electric for its over-dependence on burning coal to generate electricity for its Missouri customers. So you might be surprised that the Sierra Club is supporting Ameren's new energy efficiency program, which will spend $150 million over three years to help businesses and homeowners implement energy efficiency programs. This investment represents the most ambitious energy efficiency program ever undertaken by a utility in our state.

The benefits go beyond the rebate checks and lower utility bills. Reducing energy consumption here means that we can retire old, dirty coal plants like the Meramec Plant in St. Louis County. That means fewer ER visits for asthma attacks, and fewer premature deaths from heart attacks and strokes. That also means a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in our area.

Examples of rebate programs include:

  • Receive $50 to recycle your old, working refrigerators or freezers – FREE pickup.
  • Programmable thermostat - $25 rebate.
  • Combine rebates to receive $720 for upgrading to an efficient air conditioner.

You can get fuller details at the Ameren program's website: www.actonenergy.com.

Please take advantage of those programs that are right for you. Then, let me know how your experience goes! I can be reached at the Sierra Club office at 314-644-1011, and via email at john.hickey@sierraclub.org.
