Urban Agriculture Committee Chair
We've been meeting the second Thursday evening of the month at the Sierra Club office in Maplewood to share our gardening wisdom, tips, and produce (Louise Belt's cucumbers, Bill Bennett's honey, Leslie Lihou's salsa).
But we've added a few activities in-between meetings: a visit to the Maplewood-Richmond Heights Early Childhood Center's garden curriculum facilities, arranged by Leslie Lihou; attendance at several Sunday evening urban farming presentations sponsored by EarthDance Farm in Ferguson, where Leslie is an apprentice "farmie"; a visit to a bee-keeping operation at a private school in Central St. Louis County Cynthia Moore has scheduled for 9-27-10 weather permitting. And we've just voted to adopt the Gateway Math, Science & Technology Magnet School at Jefferson & Biddle in St. Louis City, where Bill Bennett teaches and also assumes responsibility for the garden curriculum, planting beds and greenhouse, etc. We hope to visit there at least monthly to help teachers provide green-thumb experiences for the pupils.
We're continuing to pursue funds or in-kind services to test soil for growing produce for a "backyard" farmer's market in Sheila Pryor's Normandy-area neighborhood. And we're cheering on the development of a community garden in Fenton which Audrey Wattler is spearheading.
We welcome your support for these activities.
