CANDIDATE STATEMENTS

Executive Committee (ExCom) members meet once per month to authorize club actions and assist activities of other Eastern Missouri Group (EMG) members.

There are seven voting members on the ExCom. Four persons will be elected, each to fill a two-year term. Voting instructions are given on the ballot (see page 7).

The following are statements by candidates for the ExCom, listed in alphabetical order.

     Mike Bollinger

Mike Bollinger

I am Michael Bollinger, a candidate for the EMG Executive Committee and I'd like your vote. I'm a long time member of the Sierra Club and have stepped up my active participation for the last eight or so years. I regularly attend General meetings, help staff the Lemonade Brigade, and I'm serving a second time as Chair of EMG's Conservation Committee.

My exploration and enjoyment of the out-of-doors began as a youth and continues today. As I get older I more fully recognize the critical need to protect and preserve wild places and to diminish our culture's environmental impacts. I have diverse and in-depth knowledge of many environmental issues with degrees in both Environmental Chemistry and Occupational & Environmental Health, and have worked in the field for over thirty years.

My organizational, communication and facilitation skills, along with my professional experience would make me an asset to the ExCom. We face numerous administrative challenges, including diminished income, strife within the Club statewide, and continued reliance on our most accomplished senior volunteers. I hope to help with much needed renewal and reinvigoration.

For the record, I work for the local electric utility, and thus would excuse myself from any strategic or policy discussions regarding my employer.

Evil prevails when good people do nothing. I weave my life around this concept. Once a stay-at-home mom, I refused to return to the work field unless for a non-profit. Now, as the Director of Public Relations for one of the area's largest recruiter of foster/adoptive homes in the St. Louis Metropolitan area, I help promote the organization within the community, oversee media/public relations, crisis communications, and public policy advocacy.

Currently for the Sierra Club, I design the layout of the Sierran–statewide newsletter, and on the Political Committee. In addition, I sit on the Executive Board for Public Relations Society of America, and a licensed foster home.

As a parent, I want to protect and fight for our Earth...for my boy to swim in clean waters, breathe fresh air, and stomp through unpolluted land. Please give me that opportunity, and more importantly, join me...don't let evil prevail.

The Sierra Club is an effective advocate for protecting wild places, preventing further environmental damage, and restoring what is salvable. Supporting these continuing efforts is our responsibility to future generations.

My active membership in the Eastern Missouri Group since 1980 includes petition campaigns, political lobbying, several committees, lemonade sales and countless outings. As a member of the EMG Executive Committee, I was representative to the Ozark Chapter ExCom (1994) and chair (1995); and am currently treasurer (1999-2008). I've undertaken extra projects including the new bylaws, public events, office equipment and office relocation. As treasurer, I've introduced comprehensive financial reporting and cost control.

I am a candidate to continue working for the Sierra Club and our natural earth.

I have been a Sierra club member for 15 years. On the local level I have been the chair of Inner City Outings for three years. On the national level I have led two service trips to El Yunque rainforest in Puerto Rico and two to Viers in St. John's, US Virgin Islands. I will be leading another trip to St. Johns' next February.

I was a founding Board Member of the local Chapter of US Green Building Council and chair of the Homes Committee. I have given several talks around St. Louis promoting Green Building. I was the first LEED Accredited Professional in St. Louis.

Recently, I have been very involved in starting a local chapter of Architecture For Humanity (AFH). We recently completed the design and construction of a greenhouse for Lift For Life Academy Charter School in Soulard.

I have been the House Leader for the construction of two houses for Habitat For Humanity.

For thirty years I owned and operated by my own design-build firm in St. Louis. I specialized in high end residential and light commercial construction. I would bring business experience to the board.

I would like to be elected to the board so that I might continue my service.
