"The State of the Legislature" will be the topic of the February 26 EMG meeting. Carla Klein will be outlining the top environmental bills being tracked at that time. Although the Legislative Session has just begun, it is certain that several of the anti-environmental bills from last session will be re-introduced. Sarah Steelman has vowed to reintroduce her bill to allow unregulated sand and gravel mining in Missouri streams, and Senator Klindt is planning to reintroduce the "cost risk benefit analysis" bill which will make it extremely difficult for MO DNR to introduce new legislation.
Carla Klein is currently the Director of the Ozark Chapter of the Sierra Club. In that capacity she serves as a member of the Governor's Energy Policy Council. Carla is also the state lobbyist for the Sierra Club, in addition to being their representative on major environmental issues affecting the state of Missouri. As Director, Carla works closely with Sierra Club volunteer activists to make key decisions on setting priorities for the Missouri Sierra Club.
Before becoming Chapter Director, Carla served as the Global Warming and Energy Conservation Organizer for the Sierra Club for over a year. She developed informative presentations to inspire positive actions to address the problems of global warming pollution in Missouri.
Carla has a history of working on environmental issues. She was president and treasurer of the Lake Area Keepers for the Environment in Reeds Spring, Missouri. Later she helped establish and maintain the area's first recycling center.
In May, 2000, Carla graduated from Southwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science with a minor in Environmental Sciences and Policy. Part of her education involved internships with the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks and as a Legislative Intern to Representative Emmy McClelland.
The February 26 meeting will be held at Litzsinger School from 7:30 to 9:00.
