The prairie flourished with colors this July, amazing us with its first season's display. Just last May members of EMG Sierra Club rooted young plants in their new garden home on the grounds of Litzsinger School, where we have held some of our general meetings. In early spring Scott Woodbury at Shaw Nature Reserve and a few Sierrans supplied the seedlings which have thrived with the assistance of the Sierra Club weed brigade.

Fittingly, the staff at Litzsinger School honored retiring cabinetmaker, Jess Altenbernd, by dedicating the prairie garden to him. Mr. Altenbernd designed equipment to help severely physically challenged children assume positions which improved the children's functioning during daily activities. It seems appropriate to dedicate the new prairie garden to Mr. Altenbernd, who nurtured the growth of children.

As the letter below, from Litzsinger School principal, Marsha Meyers, indicates, the Litzsinger School community appreciates the prairie garden Sierrans have created.

Dear Mr. Talonn:

On behalf of the staff and students of Litzsinger School, I want to thank you for your generous donation of the prairie garden. We would like to thank everyone who donated his or her time, effort and materials. Some of the flowers are blooming and are bringing much joy to the students at our school. Students visit it regularly to look at the butterflies that are attracted to the beautiful flowers. Again, thank you so much. Your donation is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Marsha L. Myers
