Volunteers have tucked in the prairie plants at Litzsinger School so the garden is more than a "gleam in the parents' eyes".
The prairie garden is a wonderful way of bringing the beauty of nature to the special-needs kids who attend Litzsinger School, located at Lindbergh just south of the St. Louis County Library headquarters.
In exchange, the EMG Sierra Club was able to hold the April general meeting at the school free of charge. Two more general group meetings will be held there later in the year.
Members of the prairie steering committee--Daniel Talonn, Diane Dubois and I-would like to thank all of you whose efforts brought this wonderful project to fruition!
We offer a special commendation to Scott Woodbury, naturalist at Shaw Nature Reserve, who provided and nurtured the seedlings which we repotted in early April.
Woodbury acknowledged Sierrans for helping him with the job of disseminating native plants in gardens throughout Missouri. Plant donors, potters, mulchers, haulers, and planters contributed to a garden which will delight and enlighten kids, staff and the community.
Because we must be vigilant for the next few years as the prairie matures, we are organizing the weed patrol. If you are willing to yank weeds this summer, call Daniel Talonn, (314) 993-5901, or Leslie Lihou, (314) 726-2140.
