After intense pressure by environmental groups, the Missouri Clean Water Commission voted unanimously to revoke a state certification awarded to Holcim, Inc., formerly Holnam. The Swiss-owned conglomerate is seeking to build the world's largest cement plant and kiln facility on the Mississippi River.
The Sierra Club, along with numerous health and environmental organizations, opposes the project on the grounds that it would pollute watershed habitat and undermine the state's efforts to comply with the Clean Air Act.
The permit that was revoked would have allowed Holcim to go forward and seek federal approval for the project.
The hilly, wooded site is located in Ste. Genevieve County.
