Start With Baby Steps
Photo and article by Louise Bullock
Perhaps you’ve read articles with envy about high adventure or wilderness experiences and thought to yourself, “Wow, when my children are a little older, I’d sure like to do that someday with my family!” Well, now is the time to build the foundation and plant the seeds to make that future dream come true. A good place to start is within our own municipal parks. Discover the simple joy of a nature trail, a fishing lake, or birdwatching, photography or tree identification. Take the first step. Bring your family to a local park. You will be instilling a sense of connection with and appreciation of the natural world. As that love grows, your family may even wish to participate in one of Sierra Club‘s service outings at either Castlewood or Don Robinson, two local state parks. Make a plan today to get out with your family for new outdoor experiences. Then one day, the challenging adventures you’ve only read about or seen pictures of will be your own. You will reflect back and realize that it all began with those first baby steps years ago.

4 Ways to Have the Greenest Christmas Tree From Earth911 most people consider live trees to be a greener option than artificial trees, which are often manufactured with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a non-biodegradable, petroleum-derived plastic. But before you and the family venture out to the nearest Christmas tree farm to chop down a live tree, consider these more sustainable options.
Our friends from the Missouri Coalition for the Environment are working to create the first-ever Extreme Urban Heat Policy Plan with the city of St. Louis. This three-year, community-driven initiative will identify and work to address increased health risks, death rates, and energy costs faced by citizens from climate change induced extreme heat.
