Sierrans are hitting the road this peak summer season to explore scenic routes, hike trails, and relax on sandy beaches. Michigan offers some of the world's most beautiful natural landscapes and wildlife. One Michigan Chapter member is determined to show everyone what amazing adventures await in the Great Lakes State. “It’s beautiful here, really stunning,” said Diane First. "We have every type of landscape. You don't need to go all over the world to experience gorgeous beaches, giant forests, and wildlife; we have it all here." says Diane First.
Diane recently suffered a stroke, and while recovering at Beaumont Hospital, the nurses gave her a book about Pennsylvania wildlife and natural places to stave off boredom. "It was such a cool activity book, and I learned so much, Diane said. “I thought ‘I could make one about Michigan! I plan to dedicate it to the wonderful nurses on the eighth floor.”
While Diane is recovering, her ability to explore in person is limited, but that's not stopping her. With the help of her niece, she is working on a compendium of Michigan's natural places and wildlife. "I bet my good friends at Sierra Club could send me materials," she said.
That's where YOU come in. When you are traveling this summer, please take a moment to pick up an extra brochure about the unique places you visit and the wildlife for Diane. "This way, I can keep myself busy and plan trips I want to take when I'm getting around a little better."
Please send materials to our office, we will pass them along to Diane. Email Cecilia Garcia-Linz at cecilia.garcia@sierraclub.org for more information or to send digital materials.
