Warmer weather is here, and I hope you are finding time to enjoy the beautiful spring. At Sierra Club, we believe nature is a human right. Unfortunately, eco-ableism and “adventure culture” have led to outdoor recreational and natural space designs that prevent the inclusion of all bodies.
Sierra Club Michigan is committed to advocating for accessibility and creating opportunities that honor the many ways a body can experience the natural world. We must collaborate with decision-makers at all levels to ensure future designs prioritize accessibility. We work with community stakeholders to comprehensively assess current accessible spaces, people whose needs are not being met and how we can improve existing spaces or create new spaces to meet everyone’s needs.
Your contribution is crucial! By submitting a review of a park, trail or natural space, you are actively advocating for accessibility. Your review will be featured in the Explore and Enjoy section of our twice-monthly Michigan Chapter Updates, as well as on our website and social media pages.
This handy guide to reviewing accessibility to trails on the Access Now website is helpful when scouting places to visit. Visit one of the Best Wheelchair Friendly Trails In Michigan, found on the AllTrails page. Then share your experience with us by sending a review to Chapter Outings Chair Cecilia Garcia-Linz at cecilia.garcia@sierraclub.org. Together, we can help close the nature equity gap.
