Sierra Club Supports Michigan Wilderness Proposal. The Sierra Club has joined the effort to designate 51,000 acres of national forest land in Michigan as wilderness. The proposal for Congressional designation of four areas within the Ottawa National Forest in the western Upper Peninsula has been endorsed by almost 400 organizations. Michigan Chapter Forest Ecologist Marvin Roberson explains the unique value of designated wilderness in his blog article here.

Clean Energy Advocacy Day is September 26. Recent smoke from Canadian wildfires has served as a reminder that climate change is already having a serious impact on the state. If changes aren't made, our air, water and the Great Lakes themselves are at risk. To top it off, energy bills are too high and big utility companies aren’t looking out for Michigan families. It’s time to take action.
That’s why, on September 26, the Michigan Chapter and Michigan Energy Michigan Jobs (MEMJ) will host a climate rally and festival featuring dynamic guest speakers, live music, and great food. Learn more and register here.

Muskegon's Dune Harbor Park: What a Relaxing Place to Walk! All the participants at the Muskegon County meetup at Dune Harbor Park had a great time and a lot of fun. The group walked around the lake, spotted fish on the water’s edge and saw views of calming dune grass slopes and clouds. We’d like to go for a walk in the fall at another Muskegon spot. If you’d like to join in or suggest a favorite park, email Tamara Horne at tamara.horne@sierraclub.org.
Sierra Club Michigan pays tribute to a long serving volunteer who has recently passed away. Kelly Green, affectionately known as Mr. Kelly, was a longtime resident of the Old Town neighborhood in Lansing where, until very recently, the Michigan Chapter office was located. What started out twelve years ago as two neighbors exchanging salutations and grumbling about the state of the world blossomed into a weekly working lunch discussing community needs, plotting solutions and Mr. Kelly helping out with whatever task was at hand. His daily visits to pet our various office dogs (and play with bunnies the day we rescued 5 from the street planter) provided a sense of community belonging and connection. Mr. Kelly will be sorely missed by his neighbors and the Michigan Chapter staff. Rest in peace and power, Mr, Kelly
