In the News: Preserving Michigan’s lands and waters, for all residents
Sierra Club's Garrett Dempsey, Program Director for Detroit Outdoors, authored an amazing piece on what we need to do to effectively protect Michigan’s wild places while also ensuring that all people, regardless of race or economic status, are able to enjoy it. The answer starts with 30x30, a bold plan to protect and conserve 30% of America’s lands and waters by 2030.

DTE Energy Settlement Is an Important Victory but the Michigan Legislature Must Go Further
After months of advocacy, a long campaign to end the use of coal in Michigan has achieved a significant step. The Sierra Club (working closely with the Natural Resources Defense Council and Earthjustice), and a group of intervenors that includes our Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office, the Environmental Law and Policy Center and many others, announced a settlement agreement with DTE Energy on their energy plan, formally known as an ‘integrated resource plan.’
We are thrilled to announce that through this settlement agreement, we have secured a faster retirement date for the nation’s third largest climate polluter, the DTE Monroe Coal Plant, as well as new commitments to invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency in Michigan.
The Sierra Club along with our partners have been hard at work in the state legislature to ensure a new reality. Right now, we have a monumental opportunity to transform Michigan’s energy future. This past month, three groundbreaking policies that reduce carbon emissions, make electricity more affordable and reliable, and invest in Michigan’s clean energy economy have been introduced in the state legislature.
