MPSC Low-Carbon Grants Mixed Bag

On June 9, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) approved close to $50 million in state funds for low-carbon energy projects across the state, supporting grid-scale energy storage, community solar, electric vehicle infrastructure, but also biogas and expansion of fracked gas infrastructure to areas now reliant on propane.

These funds come from Public Act 53 of 2022 and Public Act 166 of 2022, which appropriated $50 million for businesses, nonprofit organizations and local governments to develop, acquire or build low-carbon energy facilities.

The Sierra Club supports the use of state funds for renewable energy projects that will help our planet and save communities money. Unfortunately, a majority of the funds will be used for fracked gas projects. The MPSC should have done more to ensure that money will be used for renewable energy, storage, and electric vehicle infrastructure. The Sierra Club will continue to fight for clean energy that is affordable, reliable, and equitable for all and will advocate against false solutions like “renewable natural gas”.
