Michigan’s Clean Energy Future Crafted Into Reality w/ Introduced Legislation

Lansing, MI - Today, the Sierra Club joined environmental partners at the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) and Michigan League of Conservation Voters (MLCV), and House Lawmakers Abraham Aiyash (D-9), Laurie Pohutsky (D-17), Rachel Hood (D-81), and Betsy Coffia (D-103) to introduce a series of strong clean energy bills. House Bills 4759 - 4761 will:

  • Mandate that Michigan achieve 100% clean energy in the electric sector by 2035
  • Update and expand Michigan’s Energy Waste Reduction (EWR) standard and prioritize better EWR programs for low-income communities
  • Expand the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) authority to consider climate change and equity in its decision making process and create more opportunities for community input

These bills align with the goals set out in the MI Healthy Climate Plan, which aims to make Michigan a leader in tackling the climate crisis and addressing environmental injustices.

In response to the bill package introduction, Deputy Legislative and Political Director Tim Minotas said:

“Clean energy is the future, but only if we have strong and commonsense legislation that allows our state to invest sustainably and equitably. The bills introduced today will allow Michigan to lead with climate solutions so that we build a stronger, more prosperous, and equitable future for everyone. We look forward to working with House leadership in prioritizing and getting this legislation over the finish line."
