Massive Gas Plant Proposal in Rives Terminated

The Cornerstone Energy Center proposal, an 1800 MegaWatt combined cycle gas plant proposed in Rives, Michigan is officially dead!

The Sierra Club played a small role in supporting the "Keep Rives Rural" campaign and lead volunteer activist Megan Short who secured a local zoning moratorium and got the developer to withdraw their grid connection application in 2019. There hasn't been any real news on it since and we stood ready to challenge its permits if the proposal came back to life, but after years of idle monitoring, we recently received confirmation from verifiable independent sources that the developer has officially abandoned this proposal.

This makes it the largest planned gas power plant defeated across the country in the last year (see the map for context).
