The Sierra Club Michigan Chapter and its partners strongly oppose recent efforts to revitalize nuclear power in Michigan. Sierra Club joined 67 organizations and individuals in calling for the U.S. Department of Energy to deny funds proposed to reopen the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant months after the problem-plagued facility was permanently closed.
Michigan Chapter Deputy Legislative Director Tim Minotas provided testimony to the Michigan Senate Energy and Technology Committee on Sierra Club’s opposition to House Bill 6019 which would require a feasibility study on nuclear energy generation to be arranged for by the Michigan Public Service Commission.
“We are concerned about the effect of the entire nuclear fuel cycle on people and the planet,” Minotas said. “Nuclear energy is risky, dirty, dangerous, slow and expensive. Instead, our state should be pursuing our cleanest, quickest, safest and cheapest energy options first: nuclear power comes out last in every one of those categories.”
