Line 5 Update 8/21/22

The Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) is now accepting comments from the public regarding the scope of an in-depth environmental review of the proposed Enbridge Line 5 oil tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) scoping process is designed to solicit comments from all parties and individuals who have information and recommendations on what the ACE needs to do. The EIS must also consider alternatives to the proposed tunnel, which advocates argue can include shutting down Line 5 entirely or using other existing pipelines instead.

Federal, state and local agencies, tribes, nonprofit organizations, interested parties and the general public are encouraged to participate by submitting comments. Comments can address potential environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts related to this proposed construction project.

Sierra Club is joining with partners in Oil and Water Don’t Mix and other organizations to prepare comments, and suggested topics for consideration by interested members and supporters will be provided in coming weeks. Suggested talking points to help you craft your comments will be posted on the Sierra Club Michigan website when available.
