SIERRA CLUB CHAMPION WINS BIG IN LONG-SHOT SPECIAL ELECTION

Walker, Michigan - Last night Sierra Club-endorsed candidate Carol Glanville garnered national attention when her campaign delivered a stunning upset victory in Michigan House District 74’s special election with 52% of the vote.

The Michigan Chapter of the Sierra Club acted quickly to support Carol Glanville when she filed to run in the special election for Michigan’s House District 74 seat, which was vacated by former State Representative Huizenga when he moved to the State Senate. Sierra Club Michigan’s local activist membership and staff have a history of working with Carol Glanville, and were familiar with her commitment to fighting for important environmental issues. Sierra Club’s grassroots power was committed to her candidacy from the get-go. Sierra Club was the only environmental organization to endorse in the race.

“Carol Glanville’s victory shows that an overwhelming number of voters from both parties will support candidates that run grassroots campaigns on issues that matter to them, and few things are as critical as the ability to breathe clean air and have safe drinking water,” said Christy McGillivray, Sierra Club Michigan’s Political and Legislative Director. She continued, “Sierra Club Michigan knows that voters across the spectrum will vote for elected officials who will fight for them, for their rights, and for a safe, livable future.”

Sierra Club uses its national platform to amplify the power of local grassroots political work. Sarah Burton, Sierra Club’s National Political Director, celebrated Glanville’s win last night. “Carol Glanville is exactly the kind of pro-environment candidate that the Sierra Club puts its time and energy behind, and we join the Michigan Chapter in celebrating her victory. ”
