Sierra Club MA stands in solidarity with our Maine chapter and supporters around the country cheering on the creation of a public utility in Maine. Investor-owned utilities in Massachusetts receive 10-15% profits from their operations and infrastructure without any benefit for the public, and they use this money from our electric and gas bills to lobby against clean power. Utilities need to work for the public—not the other way around. We hosted 2 champions of Maine’s public power referendum in a recent advocacy hour to discuss how and why they are making the move to public power.
Jonathan Fulford is an executive committee member of Sierra Club Maine and is on the executive committee of Our Power, a Maine advocacy organization behind the efforts for a public utility. Jonathan has been working to bring public power to Maine since 2019.
Seth Berry is a former State Representative in Maine and one of the legislative architects of the bill for public power. Mr. Berry served in the legislature from 2006 to 2022, during which he served in a variety of roles including as the House chair of the Utilities, Energy, and Technology Committee, and as the Majority leader.
We support a number of utility reforms in Massachusetts. To join our efforts, please sign up for our Energy Justice Organizing Team. Our Energy Justice Organizing Team serves as a hub to learn about what's going on in the world of the Massachusetts energy transition and how you can take action.
