This morning the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Delegate Aruna Miller for Maryland’s 6th Congressional District.
Betsy Johnson, Political Chair for the Maryland Sierra Club:
"As a state legislator and engineer, Aruna Miller has consistently advocated for public policy solutions based on her constituents’ needs and real science. An early opponent of fracking and of Transcanada's proposed Potomac Pipeline, Aruna has shown she will stand up to powerful interests to protect the environment. A mother, immigrant and engineer, Aruna will bring a different perspective to Congress -- a welcome change from the dominant voices of this administration."
Aruna Miller has served as Delegate for Maryland’s 15th district for over a decade. Delegate Miller was the first Indian American woman elected to thMaryland Legislature, and when elected, will be the only woman in Maryland’s Congressional and Senate Delegation.
Aruna’s Record
Aruna has been a lead voice calling attention to the environmental and health risks associated with artificial fields and playgrounds made from shredded tires. Most recently, she sponsored legislation to prohibit the use of state funds for the construction of artificial turf fields.
Aruna serves as a Commissioner on the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin. In her leadership capacity she publicly opposed the Transcanada (Potomac) Pipeline and urged her fellow commissioners to follow suit.
Aruna was an early opponent of fracking, supporting former Delegate Heather Mizeur’s proposed moratorium in 2013 before most Marylanders had heard of fracking. She was a co sponsor and active supporter of the Maryland fracking ban, which passed in 2016.
She has a lifetime score of 94% on the MD League of Conservation Scorecard.
Aruna has the support of 314 Action, Delegate Kumar Barve, Chair of the House Environment and Transportation Committee.
