College Park. This morning the Maryland Chapter of the Sierra Club announced over 50 “early endorsements” of incumbent state senators and delegates who, in their service in the General Assembly, have helped lead the fight to protect and preserve Maryland’s environment.
“These Sierra Club endorsed candidates have demonstrated strong leadership in promoting clean air, clean water, and cleaner energy for a healthier Maryland,” said Josh Tulkin, Director of the Maryland Sierra Club.
“The Sierra Club supports incumbents who stand with us for the environment. These legislators have voted consistently to provide Marylanders clean air and water, restore the Chesapeake Bay, and combat climate change,” said Betsy Johnson, Political Chair for the Maryland Sierra Club.
The Maryland Sierra Club has a rigorous process for endorsement. The first step is to review the voting records, public statements, and public advocacy of incumbents seeking re-election to decide upon early endorsements. Next, the Sierra Club will review questionnaire responses and conduct interviews of other incumbents, as well as additional candidates. This includes legislators appointed to their seats, and incumbents seeking to move from the House of Delegates to the State Senate. The Maryland Sierra Club’s Political Committee conducts thorough reviews of all candidates based on their environmental records and policy positions.
The Maryland Sierra Club has set a goal of raising $100,000 to support pro-environment candidates in the 2018 election. It has already raised over $40,000.
