Maine is the most heating-oil dependent state in the U.S., and it is our top priority to make our homes, businesses, schools and other buildings use less energy through weatherization, insulation, energy efficient lighting, and other improved technologies.
Sierra Club Maine's Green Sneakers Program
Our Green Sneakers Project educates Maine homeowners about the importance of making their houses more energy efficient and about rebates and other incentive programs offered through the state's Efficiency Maine program. Green Sneakers volunteers have delivered over 4000 reusable bags of energy-saving gifts and information in 20 communities and talked to homeowners about available incentives for energy improvements. These trained and trusted messengers returned with contact information for many of homeowners eager to take the next steps towards a home energy retrofit.
With the assistance of professional home energy auditors, Green Sneakers trains and mobilizes community volunteers and high school youth (Future Leaders/Homeowners Initiative) to do Home Visits/walk-thru’s with interested homeowners, family and neighbors.
