Corrupting corporate money pouring into our government. Assaults on the right to vote. Gridlock and obstruction in Washington. There’s no question -- our democracy is in trouble. To protect our environment, we must protect our democracy.
On April 16th through 18th, thousands of people from over 170 organizations are mobilizing in Washington, DC for Democracy Awakening to demand a democracy where every vote is heard and counted, all Americans have an equal voice and money doesn’t buy access and power. We will converge upon Washington, D.C. for an array of actions, including demonstrations, teach-ins, music, a Rally for Democracy, and pressing for a Congress of Conscience advocacy day.
We see threats to our democracy every day, with blatant obstructionism in the Senate and refusal to even hold a hearing on a Supreme Court nominee, failing to hold a hearing on voting rights, failing to move forward on money in politics reforms. We are coming to Washington to demand a democracy with an equal voice for everyone and to demonstrate the breadth of voices calling for change.
The polluting corporations and executives we fight every day are the same people opposing us in demanding a stronger democracy. Democracy Awakening presents an opportunity for the Sierra Club members, leaders and staff who are fighting for a just transition to clean energy and to protect the health of our families and communities, to stand alongside activists across many movements: civil rights; labor; reform; and economic, racial and social justice.
Sierra Club’s focus will be the Rally for Democracy, on Sunday, April 17th. To RSVP for the Rally for Democracy, please RSVP here: sc.org/DemocracyAwakening.
