Sierra Club has set a goal of conserving 30 percent of our public lands and waters by 2030 as a key way to improve climate resiliency. Flourishing natural areas and parks are indispensable to people's health, prosperity, cultural traditions, and enjoyment. They also play a critical role in combating the climate and extinction crises.
Hoosiers have an important role to play in helping us achieve this goal by supporting legislation that would more than double the size of the Charles Deam Wilderness Area and establish the Benjamin Harrison National Recreation Area.
Take action now! Tell your members of Congress to support legislation to expand the Deam Wilderness and establish the Benjamin Harrison National Recreation Area.
Indiana Senator Mike Braun introduced S.2990 in September of 2023 to protect these public lands and Representative Erin Houchin recently introduced a companion bill (H.R.8535) in the House. Now we need the rest of Indiana's congressional delegation to sign on to support this important bill.
S.2990, re-introduced as S.4402 by Sen. Braun in May, 2024 will more than double the size of the Charles Deam Wilderness Area near Bloomington, increasing it by 15,300 acres and will establish the Benjamin Harrison National Recreation Area on an additional 29,382 acres of national forest land explicitly to protect the Monroe Reservoir drinking water supply.
This legislation will benefit all Hoosiers and help us meet critical national conservation goals. The Deam Wilderness Area expansion and the protection of drinking water will have a profound impact on local communities and will help our climate by restoring more public forests to mature and old growth conditions.
Please contact your members of Congress now to help us build support for this important piece of legislation!
Sincerely,
