About the Heartlands Group
The Heartlands Group serves the greater Indianapolis area. It's part of the Hoosier Chapter of the Sierra Club, hosting Sierra Club outings, hikes, conservation education and sustainability events in Central Indiana. Our mission is to leave a better environment for future generations. We will increase environmental awareness through action and education.
You are welcome to join us as we explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth.
Join us on the trail! You can find all Sierra Club hikes and outings in Indiana at sc.org/hcevents
Come join us at Ritchey Woods on June 15!
Join us for a FREE hike and a phenology-focused mini-bioblitz as we partner with Indiana Phenology and stroll through Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve.
Learn about what you see in nature as we use iNaturalist and document our observations. It will be a good learning experience as we enjoy nature, learn, and document our findings. Indiana Phenology will show us how easy it is to go anywhere and learn and record nature creating a database for others to study. This is a family friendly engagement. We will have refreshments and door prizes.
We will meet at the cabin by the parking lot and proceed to the shelter. There will be a quick orientation and then we will hit the trail.
Bring your family and friends. Make sure you download iNaturalist to your cell phone and create an account before you arrive, if you would like to take part in documenting your observations.
Join us in Fishers to Stop Duke’s Dirty Rate Increase
Duke is our state’s largest utility and the furthest behind in transitioning to renewable energy - still generating around 95% of its power with fossil fuels. Duke’s 2024 rate case proposes dumping hundreds of millions of dollars to prop up coal.
According to Citizens Action Coalition, Duke wants to raise the average residential customer's bills by $42 a month by 2026 (a 33% increase). Duke’s greed is obvious - Duke earned $497 million in profit in 2023.
It’s time for our communities to rise up and demand Duke’s rate increase be OPPOSED. Oppose the increase now at sc.org/dukeistheworst.
Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter has a whole program of events and hikes this summer, led by our experienced volunteer leaders. Visit the Upcoming Events and Outings page on our website to find out more!
