This article takes a pause to look back and reflect. Good things can happen. Over 90 comments were made to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the November, 2022, deadline regarding the proposed expansion of silica sand mining east of Starved Rock State Park. The U.S. Silica Company (not a governmental entity) had filed for a Corps permit to impact wetlands and habitat areas with a new quarry. The proposed excavation would have been toward the eastern side of Starved Rock State Park and across state Route 71 from other park property along the Illinois River. Currently the mining company is excavating a previously permitted quarry next to where they wanted the new mine.

In August, 2023, and then again in February, 2024, the Corps requested answers to several matters. The company did not provide substantive responses indicating only that, “current discussions are ongoing regarding the magnitude and length of additional studies.” The Corps maintained their standards of review regarding this application and notified the company that the application was withdrawn. While this does not mean the company cannot reapply, let us reflect on how important it is to respond and work to protect our environment. Thanks to every person and the numerous organizations and other entities that sent comments of concern regarding destruction of wetlands, habitat loss for at risk species, stream damages, water drawdown, and harm to a state Natural Area, among many other issues.

Our individual actions and group responses build to make issues known and can make a difference. If we do not try, who are we? We know that in the face of what looks like ‘business as usual’ we need to act. Take a break and take good care of yourself! Heart of Illinois Group Sierra Club needs every member to be alert and to be ready to pitch in with participation to protect the environment for our families and our future. For whatever lies ahead, we can and need to stand up and speak out for the importance of protecting water resources, wetlands, and the amazing nature that sustains us all.
