Chicago, IL. -- Today, Sierra Club Illinois announced its endorsements in the primary election for the Illinois General Assembly, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, and the Cook County Board. Sierra Club’s full list of primary endorsements can be found here and will stay updated as more endorsements are announced.

“As the country and world face challenges due to the ongoing climate emergency and the impact of the crisis in Ukraine and rising energy prices, Illinois needs leaders who are grounded in justice and guided by science more than ever to confront these challenges. As we continue to make progress toward bringing reliable and affordable energy to hardworking Illinois families across the state, it’s critical that we have climate champions in the Illinois General Assembly who will fight for those values,” says Sierra Club Illinois Deputy Director Dominique Salice. “We are engaging in the primary elections to ensure that the candidates on the ballot this November are committed to fighting for and investing in policies and programs that will bring equitable clean energy to the people of Illinois.”

Sierra Club will be running a mail and field program grounded in traditional grassroots and community organizing tactics in these districts to activate the organization's nearly 30,000 members and supporters to get out the vote for these candidates.

“The passage of the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act last year is proof that profound action on climate can happen at the state level, and even set the stage for other states across the country to follow suit. As Illinois implements CEJA and continues to fight for environmental justice, safe and clean water, and wild spaces we can all enjoy, we need candidates up and down the ballot who will fight for these priorities. We are proud to recommend these candidates who will do just that,” said Sierra Club Illinois Political Chair Barbara Hill. “As we reemerge from two years of isolation and protection due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we look forward to safely reconnecting with voters virtually and in person to make a difference in these key races.”

Sierra Club’s contacts with Illinois voters on behalf of endorsed candidates are funded by Sierra Club Illinois PAC. Copies of our reports are available from the State Board of Elections in Springfield, Illinois.
