Harwood Lodge

Harwood Lodge was built in 1930 as a memorial to Aurelia S. Harwood, past president of the Sierra Club and Angeles Chapter leader. The lodge stands today as a place to get away from the city and enjoy the solitude of clear mountain air and blue skies.  Pictures from the past.

  • Location: In the San Gabriel Mountains, Angeles National Forest, north of Claremont, at the base of Mt. Baldy (Mt. San Antonio). Elevation is 6000 feet. Chains may be required when snow falls.
  • Capacity: Overnight 50 (more if tenting outside).
  • Facilities: Large, rustic stone building with 40' great room with woodburning fireplace, dining/sitting room with woodburning stove. There is a fully-equipped kitchen including dishware, cutlery, stoves/ovens and refrigerators. There is dormitory sleeping facilities and family bedrooms and restrooms with showers. 
  • Reservations: Open to Sierra Club members and their guests at nominal rates. (See prices below). Reservations are required for all Open weekends and events. Reservations are made through the Schedule of Activites web page.

Operation and Responsibility

The lodge is available for use by all members of the Sierra Club who may bring 2 non-member guests each. On open weekends, the Host reserves the right to limit the of people in the lodge to 50 persons who register (no walk-ins will be permitted). The Host is in complete charge of the building, utilities and fireplace. Children are welcome & must be supervised by a parent at all times. Harwood is completely volunteer-run and operates on a share-the-work basis. Those staying at the lodge are asked to share in daily clean-up duties.

Open Weekends

Harwood is open many weekends of the year. Sierra Club members & their guests are welcome from 10 am Saturday - 3 pm Sunday. Participants must bring their own food, sleeping bags/bedding and personal items. Click here for the outings calendar and wait for the Angeles Chapter SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES page to load. Scroll down and click on Search Options. After Word or phrase to search for: enter Harwood and click Filter Activities. There will be a listing of open weekends and other Harwood sponsored events. Open weekends require a reservation. To register, roll your cursor over an activity name for a short description; click an activity name to get specifics and to register.

Fees

Fees are collected by the Host on Open weekends & Sierra Club members should be prepared to show their membership card. Fees are the only income available for the operation and maintenance of the lodge.

Garbage and Waste

Visitors must take all of their food with them when they leave. All garbage/recyclables are bagged and taken down the hill by those using the lodge.

Group Reservations

Sierra Club groups & non-Sierra Club groups are welcome to reserve the Lodge. Your group Leader must contact the lodge Scheduler (Elizabeth Ward) well in advance to reserve a date A $100 non-refundable deposit is required for SC groups. A $300.00 non-refundable deposit is required for non-SC groups for reserved weekend plus a $1M certificate of liability insurance naming Sierra Club/Harwood Lodge. Per person rate for non-SC groups is $30 which comes out of the deposit, so if there are more than 10 attendees each additional person pays $30. Examples of past groups who have enjoyed a stay at the Lodge are: Girl/Boy Scouts, dance groups, First Aid training.

Restrictions

Smoking is NOT permitted anywhere in the lodge or front porch. No pets allowed. On open weekends, no noise producing equipment (radios, TVs, mobile phone music, musical instruments, etc) is allowed unless agreed upon by all present or as noted in the Activity Schedule.  Cell phone or Skype conversations are not permitted anywhere in the lodge or front porch. WiFi is avaiable for a nominal fee from an independent provider. Sleeping is confined to dorm rooms only.  No sleeping in public room (main room or dinning room).

Upkeep

Harwood is maintained by volunteers & we ask that everyone treat it with respect for future generations. Everyone who visits shares chores to ready the lodge for the next weekend. Also, work parties are held 3 times a year in April, July and October when deep cleaning & general maintenance is performed.  Everyone is welcome to join in on a work party!
