One of the great things about being a member of Sierra Club is learning about our local environment. No one can possibly know everything but as a group the Loxahatchee Group has a lot of cumulative knowledge.
Last month I innocently used a photo of a Lantana Camara. Only to find out it is a terrible plant. So don’t plant it!
We can’t know everything but consider asking someone for their input and learn from your mistakes.
When gardening don’t just plant lantanas, be specific, plant native lantanas. Go to a nursery that specializes in native plants to be sure.

Amanda Landazury Awarded Alan Parmalee Memorial Scholarship
Funded by the Sierra Club Loxahatchee Group. By Ricardo Zambrano
You can just tell how passionate Amanda Landazury is about getting to work on future projects related to the environment. She has been interested in animals and plants since she can remember and is now able to work on things she is interested in that will drive her further in life.
During her time at the Gale Academy of Environmental Science she had the chance to run an experiment regarding how acidic deposition affects the pH of local bodies of water (lakes) in public parks. She now knows that results are hard to replicate and some of the materials used are unconventional. She also gained knowledge from previous research on the causes and impacts of acidic deposition both locally and globally over time.
Amanda plans on attending Florida Atlantic University, studying Marine Science. The Sierra Club Loxahatchee Group is so honored to help her fulfill her studies and dreams by providing her with a $2,000 scholarship from the Alan Parmalee Memorial Scholarship through the Gale Academy of Environmental Science at Forest Hill High School and the Friends of the Academy. On May 2, 2024, the Loxahatchee Group and several other non-profit organizations attended an awards banquet at the Loggerhead Marine Life Center in Juno Beach to present a total of $27,000 in scholarships to five outstanding graduating seniors of the Academy. The awards will assist them with their college careers and help them continue their commitment to environmental stewardship.
Congratulations to the Academy graduates and to this year’s scholarship recipients:
Amanda Landazury: The Alan Parmalee Memorial Scholarship funded by the Sierra Club Loxahatchee Group, and the Leah G. Schad Memorial Scholarship (supplemented with additional funds by the West Palm Beach Fishing Club). Jason Bauer: The Nicholas Megrath Scholarship and the Treasure Coast Chapter of Florida Association of Environmental Professionals Scholarship. Daniel Calderon: The Classmates of Nicholas Megrath Scholarship. Jacob Robert: The Audubon Everglades Scholarship. Ena Harbison: The Peggy and Joel VanArman Scholarship.
Thank you, Sierra Club Loxahatchee Group, for continuing to fund the Alan Parmalee Scholarship!

Go Solar Together!
Have you ever thought about putting solar panels on your roof? We’re teaming up with nonprofit Solar United Neighbors (SUN) to bring you the Palm Beach 2024 Solar Co-op — a free group to help you go solar.
The Palm Beach 2024 Solar Co-op will help Palm Beach homeowners and small business owners learn about solar together and purchase solar panels at a group rate from a single installer.
Together, co-op members will learn about solar energy and leverage their numbers to get competitive pricing and quality solar installations. After a competitive bidding process facilitated by SUN, a group of volunteers from the co-op will select a solar company to complete the co-op's installations.
Interested in learning more about SUN and have your solar questions answered? Attend a Solar 101 information session. Zoom in person or recorded.
Join solar neighbors for their next in person Solar 101 session. This will be an informational session where you can learn about solar energy, meet other interested folks and ask questions.
Do you have an idea for a project that could impact Broward County? Do you know someone in Broward County who might be interested? You can make a difference and win $$
