Volunteer Opportunities

Make Delaware Greener - Volunteer with Sierra Club!

There are a million and one ways to get involved with Sierra Club. We're tackling climate change, protecting the wild parts of Delaware and fighting for Environmental Justice. But we can't do it alone — we need your help! No matter if you just have an afternoon to spare or want to become involved with one of our campaigns, your skills are needed and your passion for the environment is welcomed. Fill out our survey for personalized opportunities and more details!

You can also join one of our committees!

Climate and Energy Committee

This committee works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Delaware and fight climate change through the legislative process as well as through education and outreach.  Our current focus is on expanding renewable energy and clean transportation solutions in the state. The committee meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month on Zoom.  Contact John Irwin for more information.

Political Committee

The Political Committee works to educate candidates and make endorsements in election cycles to help ensure that our priorities are at the center of every election. Political Committee members also volunteer for candidates and campaigns and for the chapter itself during election cycles.

Sign up here if this sounds like something you want to be a part of!

Conservation Committee

The Conservation Committee examines all other environmental issues except climate and energy. Examples include water quality, plastic pollution, coastal zone preservation, biodiversity and native species, and other important environmental challenges. We look at fracking and off-shore drilling issues as they relate to water quality. During our legislative session, the Committee analyzes proposed legislation relating to the environment and recommends Chapter positions. The Chapter's Conservation Committee is traditionally the flagship committee of any Sierra Club chapter since, of course, we are a conservation organization. The committee meets on the third Monday of every month. Contact Cheryl Siskin for more information.

Environmental Justice Committee

The Sierra Club Delaware Chapter has recently elected to form an Environmental Justice Committee in order to help guide our organization in our efforts through the lens of the Jemez Principles while working directly with impacted communities.

Our objectives will be:

  • To partner with EJ Communities to advocate for positive legislative, permitting, zoning and regulatory change at the local, state or federal levels.
  • Increase awareness of critical environmental issues, and strive to increase the benefit of climate solutions to communities most harmed by fossil fuels. Conduct or connect training and informational sessions on the causes and effects of climate change, health impacts of pollution, and the benefits of proposed solutions.
  • Support the development of self-sustaining advocacy capacity in EJ communities by transferring the necessary knowledge.

If you want to be more involved in this committee, contact Willie Scott to learn more.

Outreach and Events Committee

An attack on our environment can come at any time and any place. That is why we have a dedicated committee that works to ensure our members and supporters are up to speed on the issues that matter most. We're  always looking for more volunteers with strong written and verbal communication skills and who are willing to learn about the most important environmental issues in our state. This team helps draft our monthly emails, our yearly magazine, writes blogs and op-eds, and operates our various social media platforms. This is also the committee that plans our outings and events! Contact Kristin Brubaker or Jack Sypher to learn more.

Executive Committee

The statewide work of the Delaware Sierra Club is directed by an Executive Committee of nine members, who are elected for two-year terms in the fall. Each "ExCom" term is for two years.  The Chapter's Executive Committee is responsible for all aspects of the Delaware Chapter, including setting priorities, overseeing environmental and chapter policies, fiscal management, and working with the National Sierra Club. The Executive Committee meets monthly on the third Monday at 6:00 pm on Zoom. Please contact Claire Simmers for more information.
