The D.C. Chapter of the Sierra Club is pleased to announce endorsements in the November 4, 2014 general election.

Mayor: David Catania
David Catania responded affirmatively to every question on the Club’s questionnaire and released a policy document highlighting his forward-looking policies on the environment. He demonstrated a clear knowledge of climate change and made suggestions as to things that he would do as Mayor to address this existential challenge. Dating back to his first years on the Council, he has amassed an admirable environmental voting record.

Council Chairman: Phil Mendelson
Phil Mendelson has been an outstanding ally in protecting the environment. He has previously been given early endorsements and has been our champion on the Council. Over his sixteen years of service as a legislator Phil has been one of the most consistent environmental voters on the Council.

Council At-Large: Anita Bonds
Anita Bonds is the Democratic nominee for the At-Large race. She responded very positively to the Club’s questionnaire and questions asked in our interview. She is very interested in solar power and its benefits in the District.

Council At-Large: Elissa Silverman
Elissa Silverman agrees with the Sierra Club on all issues and is very interested in making public transit a viable option for all commuters. She often bikes and uses buses, metro and moved near the street car in anticipation of its start.

Council At-large Robert White
Robert White had positive responses to every question on the Club’s questionnaire. He understands the issues, having worked on environmental policy for Eleanor Holmes Norton. He has a green roof on his new garage.

The two highest at-large vote getters win seats on the Council.

Council Ward 1: Brianne Nadaeu
Brianne Nadeau is the Democratic nominee for the Ward 1 Council race. As an ANC commissioner, she created a record of environmental activism by establishing the 15th street bike lanes and protected Meridian Hill Park. She co-created the U Street Movie Series to benefit Harrison Park, founded Sustainable U to get neighbors organized in energy conservation and collaborative waste management. Brianne Nadeau agrees with the D.C. Sierra Club on every issue on our questionnaire.

Council Ward 3: Mary Cheh
Mary Cheh has been instrumental in the introduction and passage of numerous environmental bills such as pesticide protection, energy that large retailers put on the District’s power grid, and Anacostia storm water control.and moving them through the Council. She is the Chair of the Committee on Transportation and Environment. Her leadership is responsible for many of the recent environmental laws in the District.

Council Ward 5: Kenyan McDuffie
Kenyan McDuffie has been a stand out on the Council, most recently in successfully defending the Brookland Green and saving the park and it's trees from development. Last year, he moved the Community Renewables Energy Act through committee and passage by the D.C. Council.

Council Ward 6: Charles Allen
Charles Allen is a new candidate, but is not new to the council or the Sierra Club. As Chief of Staff to Councilmember Tommy Wells, Charles Allen drafted the bill to ban burning coal in D.C. and he was the coordinator of the Anacostia River Clean Up and Protection Act, the bag law.

Sierra Club rules require 2/3rds super-majority votes in two committees for any candidate to receive an endorsement. Each viable candidate is sent a questionnaire and invited to meet with us to discuss the issues.
