Candidate Statement of Chris Burger

I have over 32 years’ experience as a Sierra Club member, serving on the Atlantic Chapter ExCom, PubCom for the Sierra Atlantic, the Energy Committee, Co-Chairing
the Beyond Fossil Gas & Oil Committee, Chairing the Zero Waste Committee, and serving as a member of the National Sierra Club Zero Waste Communities Team. In my
own community, I was part of the effort to stop a trash incinerator, but more importantly, I wrote Broome County's recycling plan, one of the first in the Country. I
have also lived a zero-waste lifestyle for close to 32 years.

I was part of the effort to stop "fracking," giving the first presentation on the subject to the Club and lobbied the National Club to change its policy on franking. I wrote a grant for the first Community Action Agency weatherization program that has since been duplicated across the country. I am a member of the NY Energy Democracy Alliance. I also built an energy efficient home that is powered completely by renewable energy.

I serve on our County's Environmental Management Council. I co-founded and currently chair the Binghamton Regional Sustainability Coalition, a group that promotes
sustainability, operates a number of renewable energy programs, a regional zero-waste initiative, an urban Land Trust, a local food co-operative, and an annual Earth Fest. I
am also a founding member and vice Chair of the NY Sustainable Business Council.

In other words, while being a strong environmental advocate and having fought damaging projects and policies, I have tried to develop real solutions and have tried to
"walk the talk" whenever possible. cwburger@frontiernet.net
