Issues

Poudre Canyon Group volunteers work on a wide variety of issues that are important to the people and environment of Northern Colorado. The PCG has led the way in:

  • Supporting and electing local candidates who stand up for environmental protection.
  • Protecting green spaces and supporting good urban planning at city council meetings.
  • Supporting PATHS in its campaign to preserve Hughes Open Space as a public natural space, free from development.
  • Demanding county commissioners enforce state oil and gas regulations to protect our environment, wildlife, and human health and safety.
  • Supporting the Larimer Alliance for Health, Safety, and the Environment in its efforts to protect our local environment.
  • Protecting the Cache la Poudre River: The PCG works with Save the Poudre and No Pipe Dream to protect the flows in the Poudre. In particular, we support efforts to stop the Northern Integrated Supply Project (NISP) that would pull an unsustainable amount of the river’s water upstream of Fort Collins in attempt to fill the proposed Glade Reservoir northwest of Fort Collins. Read more about this project at www.savethepoudre.org.
  • We also support No Pipe’s Dream effort to stop the City of Thornton from pulling its share of the Poudre water upstream of Fort Collins. Their scheme, which was already rejecting once by Larimer County Commissioners, would require miles of pipeline through northern Larimer County, and a significant reduction of the river’s flows through Fort Collins. Along with No Pipe Dream and Save the Poudre, we support the option of allowing the water to flow through Fort Collins before Thornton diverts it. For more information on this effort, see https://nopipedream.com/.
  • Organizing educational meetings for members and the community. Topics have included continuous air quality monitoring, single-use plastics, candidate meet-and-greets, and more.
  • Advocating for continuous monitoring of local air quality
  • Opposing an amusement park adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park south of Estes park.
  • Supporting mass transit and bike lanes in Fort Collins.
  • Organizing recreational outings for members and guests.
