The Sierra Club is proud to send you the official 2023 Board of Directors election materials. Please take a moment to learn about the candidates for the 2023-2026 term of the Board of Directors. Voting on new Directors is a privilege of Sierra Club membership and we hope you take this opportunity to choose the leaders you believe are the best fit to guide our organization.

Your vote will impact how we achieve our collective vision of a healthy, thriving planet for all, and continue our transformation into an equitable and just organization. Voting only takes a few moments of your time, but the benefit to our organization, our mission, and our planet is far-reaching.

The Board of Directors, composed of 15 elected volunteer, grassroots leaders, is the governing body of the Sierra Club. The Board has the responsibility and authority to oversee all staff and volunteer activities of Sierra Club, to establish Sierra Club’s conservation priorities and internal policies, and to adopt and implement the annual budget. The Board of Directors elects Sierra Club’s officers, including the President and Executive Committee, and hires and manages Sierra Club’s Executive Director. Board Directors typically also serve on at least one of the Board’s advisory committees. It’s a big job, and it requires Directors to consider what is best for the whole of the Sierra Club, and to put the organization’s interests above their personal priorities.

As a peer-driven organization with millions of members and activists, Sierra Club is bound together by our love of the environment, our commitment to justice, and our determination to find ways to slow and even stop the climate crisis. To do that, we need to stand together, united by our common values, guided by leaders who embrace our mission. The Board will be overseeing critical work in the coming year, including onboarding our new Executive Director, establishing our budget and policy priorities, and advancing work on vital change processes underway to strengthen our organization.

Electing the very best candidates to our Board of Directors will determine Sierra Club’s strategy as we tackle the challenges ahead during this critical time. At Sierra Club we believe we are Powerful Together. Our strength lies in our collective action, and our differences only divide us if we allow them to.

The 2023 Sierra Club Official Ballot includes seven nominated candidates for the five open seats on the Board of Directors. There are no petition candidates this year.

The Nominating Committee, an independent body of volunteer leaders, recruited potential candidates and conducted a thorough vetting process to identify individuals who demonstrate equity values; are dedicated to the purposes and goals of Sierra Club; able and willing to accept the responsibilities of a Director; able and willing to dedicate sufficient personal time to Board duties; able to think and plan strategically and politically; aware of critical environmental issues; knowledgeable about the structure and operations of Sierra Club; and able and willing to deal with the broad range of issues that come before the Board, with empathy, humility, and collegiality.

Thank you in advance for your commitment to Sierra Club and for your thoughtful consideration of the 2023 Board of Directors candidates. In this moment of transformation for the organization and urgency for our planet, exemplary leadership will be essential to Sierra Club’s legacy and future.
