Shannon Cuthbert - Brooklyn
I grew up in NJ but recently moved to Brooklyn, close to Coney Island. In 2014, I graduated from Hamilton College, near Utica, NY, where I had majored in Creative Writing and Psychology. Since graduating I have been working at BBC’s New York City office within their consumer products department, assisting their licensing and BBC Shop ecommerce teams. Outside of work, I love writing (particularly poems and short stories), reading (mostly fiction, with lots of short stories and sci-fi), drawing, playing violin, baking, going on hikes, and bike riding. I also enjoy volunteering with IndyKids, a nonprofit that pairs elementary school-age students with mentors who guide them through the process of writing articles that have a focus on social justice; the articles are then published in a newspaper that’s written entirely by the students and is distributed throughout schools.
Regarding my involvement thus far with Sierra Club, since early 2017, I have been volunteering as the Atlantic Chapter’s social media coordinator. In this role, I’ve assisted with managing the Chapter’s Facebook and Twitter pages, and I created an Instagram account in order to share photos of Chapter events, as well as photos taken by other NY environmental organizations and state parks. In addition, for the past few months I have also assisted Sierra Club’s NYC group by contributing posts to their newly launched website and social media pages, and have been serving temporarily on their ExCom since June. I have also enjoyed attending the group’s Sustainability Series events throughout the spring.
Prior to working with the Sierra Club, I had volunteered with a nonprofit organization called Wildlife Conservation Film Festival, assisting with their social media pages and blog, and helping draw attention to their annual film festival in NYC, as well as to more regular film screenings and other events.
