About

We Are Sierra Club NYC

The Sierra Club NYC Group is composed of all members of the Sierra Club in New York City. We are organized around an Executive Committee that meets on the second Monday of the month at 7pm, and the following subcommittees which focus on issues important to our members

Food, Composting, and Soil Health
This Food, Composting, and Soil Health Committee collaborates with city agencies, environmental organizations, advisory boards, and community gardens to ensure that our food and food waste systems are holistic, and best serve the needs of New York City.
*Karl Palmquist, Bonnie Weber, and Irene Van Slyke, Co-Chairs

ESG and Sustainable Finance Committee
The ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) and Sustainable Finance Committee works to promote sustainable development by supporting a net-zero economy and green finance. The committee works to promote education, understanding, and action on creating a nuanced, sustainable financial system.
*Kevin Costa, Chair

Transportation Committee
The Transportation Committee works to accelerate New York City’s reduction of transportation-related emissions.
*Wayne Arden, Chair

Political Committee
The Political Committee interviews candidates running for public office, endorsing those it believes will be strong environmental leaders. The Committee then identifies priority races for the purpose of supporting endorsed candidates with people powered campaign and with the help of the Atlantic Chapter (NY State Chapter).
*Jason Dragseth and Irene Van Slyke, Co-Chairs

Zero Waste Committee
The Zero Waste Committee considers the intersection of consumption, environmental and social justice, and human and environmental health as they relate to waste from consumer products (especially plastics). They seek to integrate reusable and low-waste alternatives into the daily lives of New Yorkers in an accessible and equitable manner.
*Karl Palmquist, Chair

Urban Sustainability Committee
The Urban Sustainability Committee works at the intersection of community needs, policy, and enjoying nature. Through cultivating collaborations with community groups and other environmental organizations, the Urban Sustainability Committee searches for how to best deploy Sierra Club resources in the unique case of New York City.
*Alan Gerson, Chairs

Beyond the Five Boroughs, The Sierra Club NYC group is part of the larger national organization. Along with the neighboring Long Island and Lower Hudson Groups and other groups from across New York State we are part of the Atlantic Chapter of the Sierra Club, and work on state-wide issues.

Regionally, we work with other Chapters, particularly the New Jersey Chapter on issues of importance across state lines such as climate mitigation plans for NY harbor.
