Cartherine Skopic 2019 Bio

As educator, I integrated concepts of environmental conservation into my curriculum through planting trees, writing and performing Earth Day plays. As Rep. to the United Nations, I worked on both the Millennium and Sustainable Development Goals and was sent to Rio de Janeiro in 2012 for the 20th Anniversary of the First UN Global Climate Conference. I attended the UN COP 20 in Lima, Peru 2014 and the UN Paris Climate Conference COP 21 Dec. 2015. I was a member of the People’s Climate Movement Co-ordinating Committee for the historic 2014 Climate March and have worked with various environmental organizations through the years.

As Vice-Chair of the Sierra Club New York City Group for the past two years, I have assisted in the running of meetings; with Sierra Club New York City Group support, organized an Earth Day NYC 2018 rally at NYC Battery Park; presented testimony at New York City Council hearings on environmental issues; tabled at NYC Climate Week Events and the NYU “Earth Matters” Earth Day Fair; worked with other members in creating our “Volunteer Social” to introduce new people to the work of Sierra Club and to join; marched leading our group with the Chair in the Sept. 20th Climate Strike March, to mention a few highlights. As Delegate, I attended and participated in all 8 Chapter Executive Committee meetings held at various locations throughout New York State. As Chair of the Sustainability Series, one of our most popular and dynamic programs begun by others before me, I am gaining experience in designing relevant programs. Through this work, I have found joy in continuing to learn about Sierra Club, upholding its values and strengthening our work together as we protect and sustain our planet. I would be honored to continue on this path as a member of the Executive Committee.
