In early January, Donald Trump and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke released a draft offshore drilling plan that proposed an unprecedented expansion of offshore drilling into nearly all of America’s waters, including the shores of Long Island.
If Trump’s plan becomes reality, the likelihood of oil spills and other devastating environmental catastrophes will increase exponentially. In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill damaged 1,313 miles of coastline, more than the entire length of California, or half the Atlantic Coast. The Interior Department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is accepting comments on the proposed plan through March 9th. Information sessions are being held in state capitals of shoreline states, Including Albany.
