I am pleased to announce that in June we will host Zephyr Teachout as a special guest for a chapter-wide conference call Q&A session as we discuss her book, Corruption in America: From Benjamin Franklin's Snuff Box to Citizens United.
Many of you may remember that Teachout was endorsed by the Sierra Club as she challenged Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo for the party’s nomination for New York state governor, and ran a competitive campaign.
In his review of Teachout’s book, in The New York Review of Books, David Cole wrote: “In ‘Corruption in America,’ an eloquent, revealing, and sometimes surprising historical inquiry, Teachout convincingly argues that corruption, broadly understood as placing private interests over the public good in public office, is at the root of what ails American democracy.”
Indeed, we as activists understand the difficulties and challenges of getting elected officials to represent us and not corporations, so the more we understand how corporate money is influencing public policy and what to do about it, the better. The call will be held June 24 at 7:30pm. Click here to RSVP/register. If you have additional questions, please email riddleriddle@gmail.com for more information.
