NEWS FROM THE LAST WEEK
CORONAVIRUS UPDATE- Sierra Club's COVID-19 response page.
BLACK LIVES MATTER- The Sierra Club released several statements this week related to the Black Lives Matter and Defund the Police marches and protests happening nationwide. Here’s our statement speaking out against Trump’s use of tear gas to disperse protesters by the White House in DC so he could hold up a book he’s never read in front of a place he never goes. Here’s our statement calling for the resignation of Attorney General William Barr, who’s lying about using tear gas against DC protesters.
Here’s a joint statement we released with partners at NAACP, Planned Parenthood, and SEIU calling for the protection of Black lives.
Also, the Sierra Club signed onto the climate letter of solidarity with the Movement for Black Lives stating and supporting the week of action. The final letter has more than 230 groups signed on.
Be sure to read the excellent column that Sierra Club partnerships director Hop Hopkins wrote in Sierra magazine this week, and read this Forbes article where he’s quoted.
Michael Brune also has a new blog post up about the Black Lives Matter rallies.
KEEP BEING ACTIVELY ANTI-RACIST- It’s a journey, not a destination, white folks! Everyone should be utilizing the Sierra Club Equity & Inclusion Department’s excellent resource section on Campfire.
THE ‘RONA IS STILL AROUND- The Sierra Club is extending its current COVID-19 operational response through Monday, August 31. This means all national, chapter and shared offices will remain closed, with rare exceptions for urgent business continuity needs. Travel, in-person meetings, public events and outings will remain on hold through at least August 31 as well.
IN THE MEANTIME- Trump continues to roll back environmental standards during the many crises happening right now. Here are the Sierra Club statements on his rollback of the Clean Water Act, the rollback of ocean monument protections, and the rollback of wildlife protections.
Now for some good news from two school districts working to get fossil fuels out of schools! The group of high school students pictured above partnered with the Utah Chapter and Climate Parents to persuade the Salt Lake City School District to pass a resolution committing to 100 percent clean energy electricity by 2030 -- and to electrifying buildings and buses by 2040. Additionally, a Climate Parents leader in Connecticut led the charge to do the same in her family's school district of Lyme-Old Lyme. A small district, their goal is to electrify everything by 2030. These wins will make school districts more resilient -- which is more important than ever!
Take a few deep breaths while gazing at this photo from Glacier National Park. Please take care of yourselves, folks!
AN UPDATE ON OTHER GOOD NEWS- Last June, the Reading (PA) for 100 team passed its commitment to 100 percent clean, renewable energy, making them the 130th community in the US to do so. A year later, as an update, the team was featured last week on the front page of their local newspaper in an article describing their journey, which started with founder Stephanie Anderson's concerns for her children and her community. Congrats to that whole team!
TRANSITION- Lindsay Beebe is the new senior Beyond Coal campaign rep on the PacifiCorp team.
