We have been on a “pause” from many of our communications, but not silent on supporting work to dismantle racism internally, externally, and structurally. We need to do more, however. The hard work of addressing racism and recognizing white privilege must be embraced by white people as we also amplify and support Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) – and not just this week or next. We must question the structures, the policing, that continues to result in the killing of Black people such as George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Dion Johnson, and a system that protects the killers, as we saw with Ahmaud Arbery.
We all have important roles to play in dismantling structural racism. As we commit and recommit to the work to make our organization, our communities, our state, and our country, more just and equitable, and to not just say Black Lives Matter, but to act like it, here are some resources:
Here are some of the organizations to consider supporting as well.
Arizona:
Phoenix:
Tucson:
And here are some actions.
- Justice for George Floyd - Support Community Investment, Not More Policing
- Meaning Through Movement Tour
- Contact your own community asking for more community investment and not more policing. Due to great community organizing led by Poder in Action and others, the Phoenix City Council just voted to fully fund the civilian oversight board for the police. This is an important step, but there is still more to do. Tucson is also considering its budget and shifting dollars from policing to communities.
- Commit to ensuring an equitable and just environmental movement.
