NEWS FROM THE LAST WEEK

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE- Campfire has an official COVID-19 page with all sorts of regularly updated information about the Sierra Club response for staff and volunteers. There is also an external-facing Sierra Club COVID-19 response page.

BLACK LIVES MATTER- This week the Sierra Club released a statement on the murder of Breonna Taylor.

SUPPORTING NATIVE AMERICANS- The Sierra Club supports the HEROES Act but issued a statement saying much more support is needed for Tribal nations.

WE’VE GOT THE POWER- This week a team of seasoned political strategists, content creators, digital organizers, activists, and communications operatives (all including Sierra Club folks!) launched Climate Power 2020--a campaign dedicated to changing the politics of climate in 2020.

POLLUTION + ASTHMA- Check out this op-ed from Veena Dharmaraj of Sierra Club Massachusetts and Ethan Evans of MASSPIRG. 

WHO RUNS THE WORLD? The Women's Earth Alliance and the Sierra Club are now accepting applications and nominations for women leaders to join the 2020 cohort of the US Grassroots Accelerator for Women Environmental Leaders. This four-month program -- supported by more than 60 organizational partners -- responds to a resounding need within our movements to support women’s leadership, scale and replicate their visions, and provide a global platform from which to rise. 

BYEEEEEE- Great River Energy announced this week that it will close the Coal Creek coal plant in North Dakota! Congrats to all who’ve worked against this polluter!

AWARDS SEASON- Just a reminder that June 1 is the deadline to submit nominations for the Sierra Club’s 2020 national awards

WELCOME ABOARD- Congratulations to the five fabulous individuals who have been elected to serve three-year terms on the Sierra Club’s national board of directors. More than 55,000 Sierra Club members voted in this election, which ran from mid-Feb through mid-April.

QUITE THE OAR-DEAL- Wanna unwind with a virtual paddling tour through a magical wetland forest? A member of the Houston regional Sierra Club group is offering just that! Follow the tour through an area of the largest cypress forest on the Texas Gulf Coast. 

WE GET RESULTS- In response to pressure from the Sierra Club Beyond Dirty Fuel campaign and partners, including more than 42,000 messages from Sierra Club members and supporters, JPMorgan Chase will be demoting former Exxon CEO and leading climate denier Lee Raymond from his lead independent director position on the bank’s board. This is a big win, and the campaign will be keeping up the pressure to get him voted off the board entirely. 

HOWLING FOR ENDANGERED SPECIES- Today is Endangered Species Day! Be sure to read about the importance of the Endangered Species Act in this blog post by Bonnie Rice, the senior rep for the Sierra Club's Greater Yellowstone/Northern Rockies campaign. BIKES IN THE TIME OF CORONA- In honor of this year’s Bike Month, the Clean Transportation for All team asked Sierra Club volunteers and staff across the country an open-ended question: “What does biking mean to you during the pandemic?” Read responses here.
