NEWS FROM THE LAST WEEK
CORONAVIRUS UPDATE- Campfire has an official COVID-19 page with all sorts of regularly updated information about the Sierra Club response for staff and volunteers. There is also an external-facing Sierra Club COVID-19 response page.
DUMB AND DANGEROUS- This week Trump signed an executive order instructing federal agencies to further waive, suspend, and eliminate public health and environmental safeguards. We had a few things to say about it.
TO CHANGE EVERYTHING, IT TAKES EVERYONE- Since March 13, the Sierra Club has engaged our members and supporters to send more than 260,000 messages to local and national leaders to keep people and our environment safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW SIERRA CLUB PRESIDENT! Congratulations to Ramón Cruz! He was elected president of the new national Sierra Club Board of Directors for the upcoming board term, 2020-2021. Cruz is the first Latino president of the Sierra Club.
BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE FOR A BEAUTIFUL PERSON- You must read this great write-up about the amazing Rose Johnson, a longtime Sierra Club activist in Mississippi who recently passed away.

WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED- Dr. Brianna Eisaman - the sister of Sierra Club press secretary Courtney Bourgoin -- penned an excellent blog post about the work against COVID-19 and what it means to be outdoors these days.
COME TOGETHER, RIGHT NOW, OVER ZOOM- This week Beyond Dirty Fuels director Lena Moffitt joined Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico and other conservation leaders for a webinar to kick off coalition-wide work to protect 30 percent of lands and waters by 2030 (30 by 30).

GOOD NEWS! Last week the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection denied the permits for the Northeast Supply Enhancement project! Way to go, NJ Chapter!
SOLIDARITY- This week the Sierra Club filed an amicus brief in support of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and other affected Tribes in their fight against the Dakota Access pipeline. The Tribes are asking a federal district court to vacate the US Army Corps' easement that authorizes DAPL to cross Lake Oahe, immediately upstream of the Standing Rock reservation.
HANDS ACROSS TEXAS- Beyond Dirty Fuels senior campaign rep Roddy Hughes reported that, recently, members of the New Mexico-Texas Beyond Dirty Fuels Team -- Bekah Hinojosa, Antoinette Reyes, Christopher Basaldu, and himself -- hosted a virtual meeting to connect frontline communities along the Permian-Gulf Coast frack cycle in Texas. Hughes said that 20 community members from Carlsbad, El Paso, Blanco, Kyle, the Rio Grande Valley, Surfside Beach, Nacogdoches, and the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe shared personal stories of living near oil and gas operations and fighting infrastructure projects.
LEAF THE PARKS CLOSED- CQ Roll Call published an article detailing the opposition to the hasty reopening of national parks. The article includes quotes from Grand Canyon chapter program manager Alicyn Gitlin and from Jackie Ostfeld, the director of the Outdoors for All campaign.

ROLL THIS STONE- This week the Sierra Club helped organize the "People's Assembly on BlackRock" to provide a forum for frontline leaders, activists, and elected officials to talk about the role that BlackRock plays in climate and human rights issues, and what we can do about it. Nearly a thousand people registered -- you can watch the full video and highlights here.
Then small groups of activists in New York, San Francisco, London, and Brussels took to the streets -- while following social-distancing measures -- to send a message about BlackRock's "hot air" on climate.
ALL-AROUND LEADER- John Osborn is long-time Sierra Club volunteer with the Sierra Club Grassroots Network Columbia River Team and the Washington State Chapter. He’s also an ER doctor in Seattle and is featured in this NY Times article about fighting COVID-19.
FAREWELL- Sierra Club chief advancement officer Mary Nemerov is leaving the Sierra Club at the end of June. Andrew Linhardt, the deputy advocacy director of the Clean Transportation for All Campaign, is leaving the Sierra Club this week.
