Earth Day 2017 Calendar of Events

 

Earth Day celebrations this year include protest marches, cleanups, a Sierra Club mixer and several hikes in the local mountains. The first Earth Day in 1970 signaled the beginning of a new era for environmentalists. Show some solidarity with Planet Earth at these events in Southern California and beyond. April 5: Bag It Special Film Screening: Bag it the Movie, Is your Life Too Plastic? A documentary film exposing the effects of plastic bags and other plasitc consumer merchandis, and its effects on the environment and the human body. Back Bay Science Center 600 Shellmaker Rd Newport Beach CA 92660. April 8: Beach Clean Up Long Beach: 10am-11am For more details  The Sierra Club along with Clean Long Beach and the Don't Waste Long Beach Coalition join together to cleanup our coastline from pollution. Our shores and waterways are polluted with debris and it takes people like you to make a difference. Beach cleanups are a great way to learn about the effects of pollution in your community and how we can prevent it. It's a great tool to protect our coeastline while promoting a sustainable lifestyle. We hope you will join us! 

April 19: People's Climate March Sign Making: I ♥ Climate Action! Come up with slogans , materials  and signs for the upcoming April 29th Climate March. Join us at the Angeles Chapter Sierra Club office 3250 Wilshire Blvd Suite 1106 Los Angeles, CA 90010 6:00pm.  RSVP here 

April 19: Have you seen this threatend Snail? Come to  a wonderful presentation by Dr. Jann Vendetti from the Natural History Museum as she presents the importance of this native San Gabriel Snail to our very own San Gabriel Mountains. 7:30pm at the Angeles Chapter Sierra Club headquarters 3250 Wilshire Blvd Suite 1106. April 22: Sierra Club Earth Day Mixer: Come celebrate Earth Day with the Sierra Club from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Los Angeles. Learn the ins and outs of hiking in L.A. from speaker Casey Schreiner, founder of the website Modern Hiker and author of the new trail guide "Day Hiking Los Angeles: City Parks/Santa Monica Mountains/San Gabriel Mountains." Also a National Park Service ranger will be talking about mountain lions and their fragile lives in the urban core. Enjoy the music, wine and hors d'oeures ; please RSVP. The event will be held at the Western National Parks Assn. Gateway to Nature, Hellman/Quon Building, 130 Paseo de La Plaza, L.A. (across from Union Station).

April 22: March for Science Pershing Square: "Science, not silence." In the era of fake news, this grassroots event underscores the crucial role science plays in economic growth, preserving the environment and protecting the health of all citizens. You can join the Los Angeles march from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Pershing Square in downtown Los Angeles. Orange County members and supporters who want to join Sierra Club members taking public transit should meet at 8:15 a.m. at the Fullerton Metrolink Station. Details here.

April 22: March for Science Fullerton: 303 W Commonwealth Ave. Fullerton, CA 92832 Rally will begin at 9am with a few speakers then lead into the march to City Hall. For more details.

April 23: Great Rendezvous Hikes: Join us for a birthday party to honor Sierra Club founder John Muir, who was born on April 21, 1838. Four hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains leave from different points and converge at Trippet Ranch for cake and a celebration. Pick the hike suited to your pace; hikes start at different trail heads at different times. O-rated. Hikes leave from Hondo Canyon, Garapito Canyon, Santa Ynez Canyon and Dead Horse Trail.

April 23: Muir Peak Rendezvous Hikes: The Sierra Club lobbied hard to get a peak named after its founder, John Muir. He did indeed roam the San Gabriel Mountains above Pasadena and Altadena and said this: "In the mountains of San Gabriel, overlooking the lowland vines and fruit groves, Mother Nature is most ruggedly, thornily savage. Not even in the Sierra have I ever made the acquaintance of mountains more rigidly inaccessible." Come hike to Muir Peak from Echo Mountain or from Eaton Saddle.

April 29: People's Climate March: Donald Trump's presidency threatens the safety and the health of our families and communities. The People's Climate Movement, which includes the Sierra Club, is putting all of its energy toward stopping Trump's attacks on our climate and our communities. On April 29, we will come together in Washington, D.C., for one massive march to bring our demands—for clean air, water and land; for our families and communities; for clean-energy jobs and climate justice—to the streets. April 29: People's Climate March Los Angeles will take to the streets starting at 11 a.m. from Banning Park and Recreation Center, Eubank and Pacific Coast Highway in Wilmington and march to the Tesoro Refinery in Wilmington. April 15, 22 and 29: The Great L.A. River Cleanup: This event turns out about 9,000 volunteers every year who remove debris and garbage from the river. Cleanups run in three areas -- lower, mid and upper portion of the L.A. River -- from 9 a.m. to noon on three Saturdays. Details here.

May 1 Climate Action: Next Steps: We resist, we build, we rise. After the People's Climate March, what's next? All are invited to a Chapter meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. on May 1 in Room 1507 of our new offices at 3250 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles. Come share your ideas and put them into action.
