Save the date for the Chapter's annual Political Leadership Awards from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 14, which this year will feature the theme Clean Air and Clean Transportation. Come meet political leaders who understand what real sustainability means and check out electric cars we'll have on display. It will be held at the Electric Lodge on Electric Avenue in Venice.
L.A. Councilman Mike Bonin (11th district) will headline the event as the recipient of the first Bill Rosendahl Air Quality Champion award. Its namesake, the late former L.A. Councilman Bill Rosendahl, left a legacy of promoting mass transit and seeking innovative solutions to mitigate green house gas emissions caused by traffic and transportation.
Rep. Julia Brownley (D-26th District) and California Senator Ricardo Lara (D-33rd District) will receive the 2016 Political Leadership Awards for their work on curbing climate change through various measures in their respective legislative bodies.
This event is a major PAC fundraiser for the Political Committee. Monies raised support endorsed candidates, targeted political campaigns and activities such as Get Out the Vote, phone banking and political mailers to Chapter members.
The theme was selected because while major gains have been made to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, Big Oil does remain a major obstacle in our fight to transition away from fossil fuels and into 100% clean energy. As Southern California scales up the push to switch to electric vehicles -- as well as stronger fuel efficiency regulations and local transit solutions -- there have been significant movements in the industry and in California's legislation.
More needs to be done to ensure electric vehicles and local transportation options are accessible to the everyone, including low-income residents.
The Sierra Club, through its political program, can provide people with passionate and joyful opportunities to make change -- through support for large-scale government, utility, and automaker policies -- and through clean energy opportunities in people’s everyday lives.
Your support of the PAC fundraiser makes a difference.
Sponsorship level donations range from $500 to $5,000 and individual tickets cost $100. Details about the location are still being finalized; please check the Political Leadershio Awards website for updates.
