Join us for a Sierra Club Panel discussion called "Remembering and Understanding John Muir"

 

Famed naturalist and Sierra Club founder John Muir had an extensive personal history in Southern California, and passed away 100 years ago this Christmas Eve in Los Angeles.

 

Sierra Club sponsors a debate among Muir experts who can talk about his time in Southern California and his contribution to the environmental movement.

 

Panelist 1: Elizabeth Pomeroy, former Chair, Sierra Club Angeles Chapter, and author, "John Muir: A Naturalist in Southern California," will talk about Muir's Pasadena friendships with T.P. Lukens, Charles Lummis, A.C. Vroman and others noted in her book. She will bring copies of the new 2nd edition of the book to this event.

 

Panelist 2: Tom Andrews, former Executive Director, Southern California Historical Society, and Muir scholar who has organized a large exhibit of Muir memorabilia currently on display at Azusa Pacific University, will tell about rare Muir books and manuscripts, and how Muir's books and quotations keep him alive for us. The four books Muir autographed for the Sierra Club's Muir Lodge at A.C. Vromans' request will be part of this presentation.

 

Panelist 3: Mickey Long, former Senior Naturalist for Los Angeles County and Supervisor of Eaton Canyon Nature Center for many years, will tell about Muir's walks in our local mountains. Eaton Canyon was Muir's most frequent starting point for his hikes in the San Gabriel Mountains.

 

Panelist 4: Glenn Pascall, Sierra Club Angeles Chapter librarian and author, "Southern California Mountain Country: Places John Muir Walked and Places He Would Have Loved to Know" will speak on "Wilderness and the City: John Muir in the 21st Century." His book is currently being run in 82 daily installments of Muir quotes and Southland mountain photos on the Angeles Chapter website.
