Alabama Sierra Club Retreat, October 11-13

Hike Ratings

Easy - Less than 5 miles, no serious elevation changes, no trail obstacles.

Moderate - 5 to 10 miles, some elevation changes or rough trail (rock hopping), or trail obstacles such as creek crossings.

Strenuous - Over 10 miles, substantial elevation change, rocky, obstructed or nonexistent trail.

Exploratory - any event where the leader has not experienced the event; may fit any class above.

Note. Participants of Sierra Club outings are required to sign a waiver.

Saturday, October 19 - Bluffline Trail Reopening Hike. Moderate.

The Land Trust of North Alabama has completed the refurbishment of the Bluffline Trail on their property on the west side of Monte Sano. Join us on a moderate hike of about 7 miles as we follow the newly reopened trail and explore some of the other areas of that property. We will meet at the Land Trust Trailhead parking lot at 9:00am. 2442-2528 Bankhead Pkwy NE Huntsville, AL. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome. Please bring water and snacks. Sunday, October 20 - Goldsmith-Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary Stroll. Easy.

Please join Kirsten for a fall morning walk at Goldsmith-Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary located along the Flint River in Owens Cross Roads. This is an easy 3 mile walk thru open fields, wooded bottomlands and swamps. We will meet at the trailhead at 8:00am - Taylor & Terry Drake Rd Owens Cross Roads, AL 35763. Dogs are allowed. Tuesday, October 29 - LED Streetlight Stroll . Easy.

The Sierra Club is Joining with The City of Huntsville Utilities and the Von Braun Astronomical Society to lead an informational stroll to view and discuss proposed LED streetlights in Huntsville. Sample LED streetlights have been installed on several streets in the Jones Valley area. We will meet near sunset in the parking lot of Jones Farm Park - 4 Mile Post Rd SE, Huntsville, AL 35802 - for a brief discussion on some of the benefits of LED lighting with representatives from Huntsville Utilities. We will then take a 3-mile informational stroll to view the LED streetlights in operation and compare them to current lighting.
