Accomplishments Cypress Creek: In Memphis, the Chickasaw Group of the Sierra Club began its water quality studies with a small urban stream, Cypress Creek. In January 2003, the Chickasaw Group released the report of its findings to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), local government, the public, and the media. To read the January 2003 report "Industrial Storm Water Pollution in Cypress Creek," click here (PDF) Wolf River Harbor: In March 2003, with the resources of a national Water Sentinels grant, another watershed, Wolf River Harbor, was targeted. Wolf River Harbor is a slack-water harbor that is recharged by storm water runoff within its watershed, and the influx of Mississippi River water at its open south end. A "no consumption" fishing advisory is posted by TDEC for this waterbody. Those findings have also been released to the U.S. EPA, TDEC, local government, the public, and the media. Stream litter clean-ups: Stream litter clean-ups: Since October 2003, the Tennessee Water Sentinels have headed up or helped other agencies in 12 stream litter clean-ups. These 12 clean-ups have engaged a total of 303 people in "hands-on" work in keeping our waterways free of litter and trash. Five tons of recyclable materials as well as non-recyclable litter have been removed from the shoreline of the Wolf River Harbor, McKellar Lake and the Workhouse Bayou watersheds, plus a park at a Memphis suburb.
