Successful program gains momentum

The Water Sentinels project in Northern Kentucky has achieved the following impressive accomplishments:

  • Northern Kentucky Water Sentinels achieved a significant milestone in their battle to stop pollution from airport deicing fluid in Gunpowder and Elijah Creeks. On Monday February 7, 2005, the Kentucky Division of Water (KDOW) issued a discharge permit that placed much more stringent requirements for control and monitoring of the discharge of deicing fluids on the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (Airport).   • Northern Kentucky Water Sentinels and a coalition of environmental and sporting groups prevailed upon Governor Ernie Fletcher to appoint a "Pipeline Safety Advisory Committee" following a major oil spill on the Kentucky River. As a result of their efforts, on March 18, 2005, less than two months following the oil spill, Governor Fletcher appointed the Advisory Committee.
