Young Adult Sustainability Biographies

Hiker by Austin BanGabriel Poveda is a Sophomore from The Woodlands High School. He is interested in studying environmental law after high school and will share 'How Fossil Fuel Subsidies Stunt Green Growth' at our February meeting.  Since he joined the YA Sustainbility Program, he started an environmental club at his high school. His group will educate younger children about aquatic science, using the nearby school pond as a teaching tool.  They will learn how to connect the human impact to aquatic ecosystems. His club will also address plastic pollution.  Working with his local township, his team will distribute re-useable totes and teach the public how to reduce plastic pollution.

Amanda Howard is a Senior at University of Houston-Downtown. She is a Biological Physical Science Major. She will present 'Sustainably Educated'.  She has an inspiring story to tell about her campus garden---an example of 'green' urban renewal that we can applaud even if the Memorial Day Floods washed it all away.  She may be set back but she has promised something bigger to come!

Ella Matsuda is a Sophomore at Rice University. She is studying Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Sciences.  She is also the Social Media Coordinator for the Coastal Prairie Partnership and Outreach Head of the Rice Wildlife Conservation Corps.  Her presentation is called, 'Pocket Prairies: Preserving the Past and Protecting the Future'.  If you are not familiar with the Harris Gully Natural Area on Rice Campus, then you must come and learn how Ella and her classmates are returning the space to its natural origins.

Sunnie Liu is a Senior at St. John's School.  She will be accompanied by Arisa Sadeghpour, another Senior at St. John's School.  Both young ladies run the recycling program at their high school, and they hope to double major in college, including environmental studies.  They will present 'ECOS Elves: Recycling at St. John's School' Find out what it takes to be a recycling elf and how their recycling program has grown.
